Communes and producers of the Leander Processing Plant in Barinas promote food sovereignty

Barinas, February 9, 2023 (Mincomunas Press) – This Thursday, the Vice Minister of Communal Economy of the Ministry of People’s Power for Communes and Social Movements, Hernan Vargas, visited the Leander Processing Plant in Socopo, Barinas state, to strengthen and promote national production and food sovereignty.

Last October 20, during a ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Coup de Timon, President of the Republic, Nicolas Maduro, approved the transfer of the Corn Processing Plant to the People’s Power so that nine Communes and the Corn Growers Network of the Sucre municipality would be in charge of planting and processing the corn.

In this context, Vargas explained that during the meeting, he met with the producers and accounted for the resources granted by Banco Bicentenario to activate a corn conditioning line in the plant.

“Also, together with the People’s Power, we participated in two assemblies. One to deal with the issue of the communal economic circuit of corn and the other to work with the Communes of the municipality and the Bases of Missions, the construction of the plan of the good communal government between the Communes, the Mayor’s Office, and the Ministry of Communes,” he specified.

Concerning the assembly of the communal economic circuit of corn, the spokesman Jhoan Pineda of the Commune Bank El Maizal expressed that “more than 13 Communes of the states of Lara, Portuguesa, and Barinas, we have met to explain the functioning of the circuit, which seeks to guarantee the necessary food not only for Barinas but also for the neighboring states”.

Likewise, the spokesman Manuel Camacaro of the Rio Morador Commune of the state of Portuguesa added that the People’s Power has taken over the Leander Processing Plant, which has a monthly processing capacity of about 1,400 tons of corn.
