Trujillo community members promote agricultural practices with low levels of contamination

Caracas, July 31, 2023. The members of the Comandante Eterno Commune, based in the Jajó parish of the Urdaneta municipality in Trujillo state, initiated a food production process with less aggressive and less environmentally polluting practices that include the substitution of resources, inputs, and chemical products that damage the soil and water.

According to Jose Torres, a spokesman for the Comandante Eterno Commune, the Jajó parish is a 100% agricultural territory, so its inhabitants are aware of the importance of taking care of the environment that provides food to a large part of the country.

“Our commune produces potatoes, celery, cucumber, cabbage, lettuce, carrots, sweet bell pepper, paprika, eggplant, zucchini, corn, beans, cilantro, garlic, green celery, parsley, among others. We live in the Andean moor. We have a direct relationship with the land. It is our subsistence. It is what we have known since we were born. That is why we take care of nature and grow our food in a less polluting way. We try to keep everything organic, although there is still resistance because the use of agrochemicals has been installed in the country for a long time”, he said.

The spokesman also explained that the community members, step by step, contribute to the maintenance of the ecosystem since the Andean soil is a blessing: it multiplies everything sown.

“The commune strives, every day, to produce everything we eat. We have abundant fertile soils. We Andean people have this great opportunity. Our commune is very supportive. We always help those who need it most. Here nobody goes hungry, never! We are peasants, hard workers, and we focus on creating well-being for everyone,” he emphasized.

Torres added that the new generations learn everything about agriculture from an early age because it is a culture rooted in the territory.

“We have a connection with Mother Earth. She gives us food, and we take care of her within our capacities and knowledge. We respond to imperial aggressions and the economic blockade by cultivating the land. We produce the food that the people need. 100% Venezuelan food. It has not been easy, but we will not stop,” he said.
