Caracas, October 9, 2023 (Press Mincomunas) – In compliance with the instruction issued by President Nicolas Maduro on the updating of the People’s Power organizational structures, with the elections held over the weekend, we reached the number of 30,452 Communal Councils renewed which is equivalent to 61.92% of the national total, which covers 6,360,170 families.
In his television program, the President recently highlighted “the democratization and renewal with the vote and popular participation of the Communal Councils in the country. It is a permanent process. Now, with the amendment of the Law, it gives them more opportunities to work”. He added that he receives with satisfaction the reports on the electoral proceedings every weekend.
The People’s Power Ministry for Communes and Social Movements registers electoral participation in the processes of renewal of spokespersons of 42.26%, with 4,107,652 people voting in the universal and secret elections with the accompaniment of the National Electoral Council (CNE) and 1,218,080 legitimized spokespersons.
Apure, Barinas, La Guaira, Merida, Miranda, and Monagas are the states with the highest number of Communal Councils renewed, above 70%, while Lara, Barinas, Merida, Miranda, Tachira, and Zulia stand out as the states with more than 1,500 elections carried out.
Another relevant fact is there were 614 elections held in the last week, from October 2 to 8, Apure, with 96 elections being the state with the highest number of renewal processes.
In March 2022, there were only 16,011 Communal Councils in force, of which 13 thousand expired in January 2023.
On September 5, 2022, during a meeting with the Council of Vice Presidents and the political bureau of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), President Maduro proposed as lines of action the broad and deep consolidation of the Congress of the New Era and the democratic renewal of more than 22,000 Communal Councils in the country.
“We will meet around the country to embrace, unite, multiply the effort and work (…) And we will deepen the democratic renewal by popular vote of the Communal Councils of the country and the strengthening of the communal movement of Venezuela”, said the Head of State on that occasion.
The Organic Law of the Communal Councils establishes in its Article 15 that the nominees for spokesmen or spokeswomen for the Communal Councils must be Venezuelan, foreign or foreign resident, inhabitant of the community with at least one year of residence in the same; present the letter of nomination or manifestation of will in writing, identifying name, surname and identity card; be older than 15 years old; be registered in the electoral registry of the community and have capacity for collective work with willingness and time.
