Caracas, September 25, 2023 (Mincomunas Press) – The men and women of the Juan Villasmil Socialist Commune in Punta Cardon parish, Carirubana municipality, Falcon state, work with small parcels of land in their home backyards to grow healthy and native food to guarantee the wellbeing of the community.
According to Julinell Matos, a spokeswoman for the Juan Villasmil Socialist Commune, more than 1,200 families in this territory dedicate their lives to agriculture, but above all, through the farming practice of small plots to guarantee family food safety.
“In every house, there is a small farm. It is a form of strategic production we inherited from our native peoples and strive to maintain and multiply it. With small farms, the environmental impact and the use of external inputs, such as agrochemicals, which are very harmful, are reduced. The community members work the land trying to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers that harm the farmers’ health and the environment. We try to use water rationally because we are aware that many people in the country do not have this great benefit,” she said.
The spokeswoman insisted that, through these farms, the community members successfully promoted awareness about the care of life and the responsibility humanity has with Mother Earth: “Because we are part of it.”
In this sense, Matos commented that this commune is widely known for its watermelon and white melon production. They also grow onions, tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, and many other vegetables, as they have fertile soils and water for a constant irrigation system.
“Our commune is an urban and rural territory. We promote agriculture in the rural area. It is a 100% agricultural territory with fertile land. In the urban area, we have local projects such as food sales, construction, carpentry, hairdressing, manicurist, sewing, bakery and confectionery. We make the most of our strength in planting to promote bartering with the other communities of Punto Fijo, who produce fish and grains like corn. For the exchange, what we are most requested is melon and watermelon. We promote the local communal markets and the fish fairs to share healthy, autochthonous food at solidarity prices for the people of the Falconian region,” said the spokeswoman.
Matos assured that the Juan Villasmil Socialist Commune puts its chest out for everything and works daily to face the blockade and the imperialist attacks.
“The Venezuelan people have faith and conviction, and we believe in what we do. We love our homeland. Venezuelan men and women are superheroes. We can do anything,” he said. (Text: Karina Depablos).
